Gift Aid It

HM Revenue and Customs introduced Gift Aid on 6 April 2000 which enables charities to claim back the basic tax paid on donations, as long as the giver is a UK taxpayer.

If you 'Gift Aid' your donation, ministries without borders will continue to receive an additional 28p in every £1 donated.

It is an excellent way for us to claim an extra 28% on your donations - without costing you a penny.  This means that for every £10 you donate ministries without borders can put an extra £2.80 to good use.

How does Gift Aid work?

Gift Aid is an easy way for you to make your donation tax effective.  ministries without borders reclaims the basic rate of tax back from the Inland Revenue.

From 6th April 2008 Gift Aid is calculated with a 20%* Basic Tax Rate.

For example to calculate a donation of £100

Donation             = £100
Basic Tax Rate     = 20%
100 – (20%)        = 80
100 x (20/80)      = £25 (Gift Aid)

* For any gift aided donations, which were made before 6 April 2008, Gift Aid is calculated with a 22% Basic Tax Rate.

To qualify for Gift Aid

For any donations you make after you have paid 25p in income or capital gains tax in the same financial year to qualify for Gift Aid.

You pay these taxes if:

  • income tax is taken from your wages or salary before you receive your pay
  • you pay tax after filling in a self-assessment form each year
  • you have any taxable savings (in a Building Society, for instance), or a pension plan, or investment income
  • you have paid any capital gains tax, on the sale of a property or some shares, for instance

Higher rate taxpayers

There is an extra benefit for our higher rate taxpayers as you are able to reclaim relief on the amount you have donated.  We, as a charity, can claim the basic rate tax on the value of your gift, and you can reclaim the difference between higher and basic rate tax.

For example, if you give £100 to ministries without borders, we can reclaim Gift Aid of £25, making your total gross donation worth £125.  Being a higher taxpayer, you can reclaim on the gross donation another 20% (difference between the two tax bands), which is £25.  This means your £125 gift to ministries without borders would have cost you £75.

All you need to do is provide the details of your gift aid donations on your tax return or self-assessment form.  What's even better, there are no limits so your gift to us can be as small or large as you wish.  If you prefer, instead of claiming back the 20% difference for yourself, you can donate it to us.  Simply select ministries without borders as your chosen charity if you are doing it online, otherwise please quote our reg.charity no: 1095446 on your tax form.
